Hi all, I am trying to use the tutorial http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/ArduinoToBreadboard
which elimates the external clock.
I am using an arduino UNO, on a Linux platform, with the 1.5.2 version of the compiler.
The 5th line of the section: Minimal Circuit (Eliminating the External Clock)

I never get to see:
You should see "ATmega328 on a breadboard (8 MHz internal clock)" in the Tools > Board menu.

at this point, I am getting confused, and frustrated, I have read the atmega 328 data-sheet, and looked for other tutorials, but it is just not working.
can anyone help me out here?

Why are you using 1.0.3 when that Beta release is targeted just for the Due?

You should see "ATmega328 on a breadboard (8 MHz internal clock)" in the Tools > Board menu.

What do the boards listed in the Board Menu have to do with the ATmega datasheet?

I suspect there's something you've assumed or a step skipped here.

I read the datasheet to verify the compatibility of the instructions to the chip.
I did assume that the 1.5.2 compiler was compatible with the UNO board, since I have been using it to program the UNO for a week or two without problems.

The "ATmega328 on a breadboard (8 MHz internal clock)" thing should be listed in $ARDUINO_HOME/hardware/arduino/boards.txt. I don't know the various versions of the IDE well enough to say if it would be included by default as the tutorial kinda implies, but anyway here's one description on how to add it:

Wow, Ok.
I switched to compiler version 1.0.3 and the tutorial worked.
Problem solved. Thanks James.
