Topic: Single Sided USB - ALL DIP no ft232rl (Read 5585 times) previous topic - next topic

Hi all

About a month back i had asked some questions regarding removing the ft232rl for custom board , to save cost for my ARP Project. I got quite a few responses and suggestions ...

Anyhow for those who are interested i have the first preview of the board , next version will be professionally fabricated ...

Some specs -

All DIP , Does not use Ft232rl :) ,  Costs less than a single Ft232rl chip in India.

100% Arduino IDE/Shields compatible , Modified V-USB CDC Drivers for USB interface and modified Mega8 Bootloader. It should work with 168 and 328 just fine.

Cons - Reliable Serial till 38400bps only , though 115200 works with errors ;) .

If you have any questions do let me know . Ill release the associated firmware and files once i have my Site up , they are all scattered right now.

Any Ideas and suggestions are welcome.

looks sweet - cant wait to see the source as well as the pcb :0)
Believe me, Mike, I calculated the odds of this succeeding against the odds I was doing something incredibly stupid[ch8230] and I went ahead

This is totally cool! I'm sure availablility of components is more of a problem for me here in Namibia than for you in India. I have a stash of ATmega32's that I salvaged off some borehole pump controllers. I'm looking to build a duino around them - something inbetween a D'nove and a Mega (I recently bought one of each of those).

I am very interested in your non-SMD USB solution as that seemed the biggest problem to me - being terrified of the idea of soldering those devices. So when will you post your stuff? Can't wait! I really like technik3k's suggestions, especially of bringing the USB lines to the edge of the board, and building more functionality into the mega8. Will you include any of his suggestions?

I'm well impressed with what you're doing. :o

anythingf new on the schematics and the software?

There are some issues still to be addressed so i am not posting any beta stuff. Default 328p setup causes issues for ex.

Anyhow a little better pic of the same thing :)

Do you have any progression on this great work: Single Side USB w/ FTDI ? Could you please share PCB, Schematics and firmware ?

Just what I have been looking for  :)

Please share, even if it only works with a 168 chip.

Hey guys, it is based on Riduino, right? You have the schematics? It is interesting to make it here because of the cost of the Arduino, for free workshops it is nice :)

Very impressive concept. Do you plan on developing drivers/instructions for all three major OSs, Windows, Apple, and Linux? I suspect that will be a big effort and time sink to test and validate across all PC platforms, however that is a major Arduino practice/principle ?

well its been a year since the guy posted his efforts. its fair to assume this is dead project? :-[

Well the major change is that now the newest Arduino Uno board uses the same idea and soon there will be a zillion asian clone makers offering the same setup.

its funny how i ended up here looking for cheaper way to make Uno.
Is it possible? does sub-ing the serial with usb connector enough to get a usb powered arduino? of course flashing the 368 with USBaspLoader
