I decided to import my IE bookmarks into firefox (firefox only being used for this forum), which resulted in the same login issues as happens with IE. It appears the forum supplies IE with bad cookies (intentional?). I cleared the bookmarks and associated cookies, and firefox could then supply a good cookie that had been saved somewhere.
