Identifying the respective pin numbers of a USB to DB9 male adapter

Hi, I am a COMPLETE novice at this and I want to find out which part of the DB9 male goes to pin 1, 2, 3 etc. and which one is gnd and such. How do I start out? Thanks!

wait a minute, I just found out that the DB9 adapter's configuration was jumbled up. The challenge is for us to find out config via serial monitor. Help please? thanks! sorry im really a novice hehe

Typically, pins 2 & 3 are the Rx & Tx pins and 5 is Gnd.
If you look into end of the connector you can usually see pin numbers. 1-2-3-4-5 are all along the "top row" which is the wider part of the connector.
If things aren't talking, switch the wires between 2 & 3.
