Nope. They wanted to see what exactly happened to passengers in a crash. The setup was to simulate a failed emergency landing, not a full on crash. I think they hit the ground at something like 40MPH. They were trying to recreate this: Controlled Impact Demonstration - Wikipedia, but with less fire so they could focus on what happens to the people inside the plane.
