The OLED controllers use the same instruction set as the HD74480 but there are some timing differences that could make the standard LiquidCrystal library unsuitable.

This is mentioned in the Adafruit description and that is why they recommend using their version of the library to take care of these differences.

You seem to have gotten your OLED display to work with the standard LiquidCrystal library but that doesn't mean that other devices, even those from the same supplier and with the same part number, will also work reliably.
