Non-SMD FTDI IC

FTDI chips are all SMT, so no luck there, but you do have some options.

If you want to roll your own circuit board, look at the FTDI chip-in-a-cable that the RBB uses. I like the looks of it, but haven't managed to acquire one yet.

Sparkfun and others make a breakout board that has the SMT part on a little board with through-holes. The lilypad arduino variant uses something like this.

If you happen to be seriously into rocketry, you may have one lying around: the MiniAlt family of altimeters use an FTDI breakout board as a computer interface.

NKC electronics has a kit with the SMT parts already soldered.

NKC and Fundamental Logic both offer RS232 variants that you can use with a standard USB/RS232 adapter (of course, you'll have to apply power to the board when going that route).

There are probably other solutions; these are what I can think of off the top of my head.
