Idea needed for hidden Target

Hi all,
first sorry for my english, i am nativ german ...

Maybe someone can point me to the right direction:
i have a small robot based on arduino.
Now i want to make a "target", means to hide a small box somewhere in the room and the robot need to locate.
IR sensor dont want because maybe the robot can not see the target (behind a wall for example).
Sound i dont want because the target is maybe hidden for longer time and no one want to her the piep piep for few hours

Any suggestions what type of sensor i can use for the hidden target?

Thanks in Advance and best regards from austria

I suspect there is no affordable and practical sensor that could perform that task. However maybe someone else can come up with an idea?

Hi,
if nobody may hear it why not trying ultra sound?

Well he did say it might be hidden "(behind a wall for example)."

does that that mean the robot needs an axe?

Maybe sniffing a radio signal, using a directional antenna, and have the robot drive towards the radio signal?
You would need to be able to detect signal strength.

Kind of like ham radio operators and fox hunts?

Yes, something like this. Everyone is building his own robort. We hide the target somewhere in the room, also hidden, and which robot is finding first the hidden target is the winner

Any suggestions and hints? Important is that the target dosn't have direct view to the robots ...
