Thanks once again tmd3. Yes, the 12V labels in my Thevenin equivalent circuits should have been 2.16V--that was indeed a typo. Well, I will have to keep my eye out for opportunities to apply the theorem. Far more satisfying (and works better) than guessing, no doubt about that!
