Laptop CD-Rom stepper motor

I have an old laptop laying around and was wondering if the CD-Rom of the laptop has an Stepper motor inside i can use?

I know normal CD-Roms from Tower pcs have them, but didnt finde any information about Laptop CD-Roms

Hi.

Yes on most of them. A very tiny one.
The motor is moving backward and frontward the read/write head where the laser is attached.
They use bipolar stepper motor 4 wires on a flat cable.
Use them same as any bipolar stepper.

Thanks!

Miniature steppers are available at bargain prices on eBay in my experience.

I never thought of CD players. I have access to a stack of desktop cd players. Are the stepper motors 5 volt or 12 volts?
Thanks
John

Hi.

From laptop/notebook: cd/dvd-rom: rated from 3.6v to 5v. bipolar stepper models.
Desktop: most of them are rated to 5v, bipolar ones for laser head support mechanical part.
For the spinning cd-dvd they are brushless dc motor or BLDC, a kind of stepper motor with 3 wires connection, like a bipolar with only 3 wires:
