Arduino web site very slow

For several weeks I have found www.arduino.cc very slow, e.g. > 30 seconds to access a page and frequent timeouts. I am based in UK and searched with Google for a mirror website or fix. What have I missed?

Known problem, server overload.

That's what I figured. I just dealt with 30 minutes of "SMF cannot connect to the database"

Known problem, no advice of when it will be fixed.

I blame my recent excessive coffee intake on the site's speed.

Reported to moderator to be moved.
Also, I have noticed alittle sluggishness but not too bad.
Usually in the ~10s range.

Site reponse sucks today, just to kick the dead horse again.

Just gave the system a review and this is my offer:

Get rid of the piwik System on this arduino Server and bring it to a new server. If you do not have another ask

Hm yes very frustrating because there are so many good recurses on this website.

In my eyes in an open community it is as much the users as owner responsibility to make it work .

What can we do?

Move the download recourses over on torrent or fileshare ( hey we up load to thepiratebay.org LOL) this way we all share the load of download recourses.

I don't know how to share a forum on a torrent wise way , but maybe such a method exist too?

Thank you for the great IDE Arduino is-

Yet another note to the forum administrators:

Usually I connect to the site in the morning and try to answer as many questions as I believe I can usefully contribute to.

However when it takes 5 minutes for a page to load I stop doing that. Not out of malice, but frustration.

It would be courteous of you to state here, on your own forum, what steps you are taking to remedy this (apart from corporate-speak like "we are investigating the problem"). For example, what changes are you considering? ... and a date when you plan to implement those changes.

@pathfinder: When I post images (eg. photos, circuits) I host them on my own web site, which reduces traffic to this site. Ditto for library code. You can't really "share a forum" because of the dynamic nature of it. The pages are served up by reading a database, which changes from moment to moment.

I agree with Nick. It's hard to answer- or even ask- questions when it takes 5 minutes per page load. Even more frustrating when you type a post, and get a "SMF cannot connect to the Database" error 9 minutes after you click the submit button.

Indeed the slowest site I have ever been to. Takes forever to load a page. Looks like a database issue. Maybe move it to better servers. XD

I have 2 Poweredge 2650's under my bed with dual 2.8 Hyperthreads. Surely those would easily quadruple the speed of this site. I think they're hosting it on an ethernet shield running on an SD card....

Clocked with a 32khz crystal

So absolutely no solid information from the admins on when this situation will be remedied? :frowning: If it were an issue of available funds, I'm fairly sure people would be willing to help contribute.

Lack of money wasn't an issue the last time the forum moved to a more powerful server. Financial support was offered back then as well. I think they made and still make enough dough to pay for such things.

There is just quite a lot of inertia. I don't know if they run this site on a dedicated box or on a shared VPS, so it's hard to tell if things could easily be improved by buying a bigger share of CPU time and RAM.

I have noticed that the messages have stopped working, I can see the list but the page only shows the top message.

8: Undefined index: can_view_profile
File: /home/arduino/public_html/forum/Themes/arduinoWide/PersonalMessage.template.php (folder sub template - eval?)
Line: 477

I hope they make regular backups!

I think it is about time 'they' stick some more RAM into the webserver / database server - a couple of Giga-bytes.

I'm a newbie here and in no position to start criticising the performance of something that is provided free of charge, but forum access from here in the UK is hideously slow and page download times of the order of minutes are not uncommon. To add injury to insult, the forum quite often times out my attempts to post replies. Perhaps that's no bad thing, but there are plenty of people here posting very valuable advice that are most likely getting the same problem and it would be a great shame if their input was lost.

Have the site admins acknowledged that there is a performance problem yet? I don't know who the admins are, but there's no evidence of an acknowledgement on this thread as far as I can see.
