safely interface with car sensors. Grounding and voltage (non OBDII)

I'm building an electronic gauge, logger for my car. I want to read an oil temp sensor and some of the outputs from the computer. Can I safely use the car ground to interface with these instruments?

Yes, most car sensors are 5v or just a variable resistance reading already.

As long as you have common grounds you should be able to take readings with a microcontroller.

Always check with a DMM first.
