Alternative IDE

Is there anyone that has managed to get an alternative IDE running with code completion and syntax highlighting? Thats it, i dont even need compiling or uploading. I've tried Netbeans (7) with the ArduinoPlugin_v1.0.tar.gz plugin, Eclipse (Helios R2) with the avr-eclipse plugin and Visual Studio (2010 Ultimate) with the visual micro plugin and i couldn't get any of them to function properly. :frowning:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got Eclipse working by following one of the guides I found on the internet but had to try it several times before it would work. You need a great deal of patience. It took many hours over a number of days.

[Edit: Forgot to mention, I was using Windows XP SP3]

I use Geany on Linux but I think it runs on windoze as well.
If you only need syntax highlighting & code completion, what didn't work with the other editors?

That's what i was wondering as well. If all you want is editing, then there are many programming editors available, many for free. My favorite free programmers editor:

As for compiling and uploading, how do you do that? Run make fromt eh command line?

I wish there was a source level debugger! That would be awesome.

Hi Winston,

You can have a look to http://arduinotovsconverter.codeplex.com/

It use VS 2010 as editor with true code completion... Arduino IDE is still needed to compile/upload

I'd be glad to have feedback on it.

The Visual Studio plugin has been re-written and is now 100% arduino ide compatible. It is well tested now, if you try it and have problems please report to the vm forum so we can find a fix. It supports all libraries and boards and includes compile, upload, programmers etc.

Here is the blurb for anyone who might be interested... If you are using any visual studio version other than express then you can use the free Visual Micro addin for Visual Studio. The addin allows us to program, compile and upload to any arduino microcontroller using Visual Studio.
