You totally had me going. I could completely believe that Britain was still exacting tribute from one or more former colonies in an amount like that which has become so small because of all the inflation over the last 200 years that nobody has bothered to cancel it. In the 1700s that was probably real money even for a nation-state.

We were still paying off ww2 to the canadians until 2006.

The lend lease arrangement with the US was finally written off this year.
