Soldering tip, flux suggestions

scottyjr:
I may be attempting soldering a QFN device, most likely using a schmartboard. I'd also like suggestions on tip size and shape to use. Thanks - Scotty

I recently soldered QFN32 chips on Schmartboard and it worked quite well. You ideally need a tip that is as small or smaller than the trace width but mine was slightly to big (it would ride the groove but not touch the bottom to melt the pre-applied solder) so I put a tiny amount of solder paste in the ends of the groves away from the centre of the board to give a higher solder pool when pushing the tip down the groove. I also soldered some QFP32 chips using conventional solder paste & stencil and the
Schmartboard was easier & quicker for me.
