I ordered SN74HC595N shift registers, but received SN74HC165N instead. I am following a tutorial that uses the SN74HC595N, can I use the SN74HC165N exactly as I would the SN74HC595N or do they differ in their usage? What is the difference between these 2 shift registers?

The 74HC165 chip is an 8-Bit Parallel In/Serial Output Shift Register, pretty much the opposite of the 74HC595 8 Bit Serial In/Parallel Out Shift Register.

No.

The 74HC164 is similar to the 74HC595 except the 164 has no output latches.

Google easily finds the data sheets for those parts.

Since I'm using the tutorials to relearn digital logic and multiplexing etc, I don't have the required knowledge yet to interpret the data sheets accurately. Thanks for your reply.
