Funny thing that 'Arduino' is actually named after a bar in Italy!
Well how do you think the weird pin spacing thing came from. They claim it was just an error due to being rushed/deadline.
Pfff, they had just slammed down too many at lunch at the Arduino, and then tried and finish up the layout work that afternoon. So we can thank that Italian bar for the screwy pin spacing we will have to live with for the REST OF OUR LIVES.
