Oh, don't swap them out if you already have them mounted, especially if they are SMD types as the article you mentioned - I just thought the display might be unnecessarily bright.
Of course, you are now multiplexing, so the same current will be shared between the two digits.

It is indeed smaller. I just couldn't think of it at the time.
