For less money they seem to offer a more basic I2C to display module that has the same functionality but minus some of the bells and whistles of the shield board:

To help electronic enthusiasts and students in the economy crisis time like this we are agreed to put this product on sales. It is now $39. We hope this help a bit.

Or just like Lefty said, you can get just the I2C 7-segment display for lower cost.

Happy Arduino!

Is this shield supported by Arduino Mega?

Cheaper to buy an As1107 and 4 x 7-seg displays. About $10

Beautiful photography.
What is the purpose of the female headers? Wouldn't any stacked-up shield obstruct the display?

The headers are offset so you cannot stack boards on top of it but some people may want to connect other devices using unused pins which would be impossible if the headers had not been 'broken out'.
