For less money they seem to offer a more basic I2C to display module that has the same functionality but minus some of the bells and whistles of the shield board:

Or just like Lefty said, you can get just the I2C 7-segment display for lower cost.
The headers are offset so you cannot stack boards on top of it but some people may want to connect other devices using unused pins which would be impossible if the headers had not been 'broken out'.
