I don't think these sources are very credible but it's all over google about a woman in Spain claiming ownership of the sun.
MADRID — After billions of years the Sun finally has an owner -- a woman from Spain's soggy region of Galicia said Friday she had registered the star at a local notary public as being her property.
Angeles Duran, 49, told the online edition of daily El Mundo she took the step in September after reading about an American man who had registered himself as the owner of the moon and most planets in our Solar System.
There is an international agreement which states that no country may claim ownership of a planet or star, but it says nothing about individuals, she added.
"There was no snag, I backed my claim legally, I am not stupid, I know the law. I did it but anyone else could have done it, it simply occurred to me first."
The document issued by the notary public declares Duran to be the "owner of the Sun, a star of spectral type G2, located in the centre of the solar system, located at an average distance from Earth of about 149,600,000 kilometres".
Duran, who lives in the town of Salvaterra do Mino, said she now wants to slap a fee on everyone who uses the sun and give half of the proceeds to the Spanish government and 20 percent to the nation's pension fund.
She would dedicate another 10 percent to research, another 10 percent to ending world hunger -- and would keep the remaining 10 percent herself.
"It is time to start doing things the right way, if there is an idea for how to generate income and improve the economy and people's well-being, why not do it?" she asked.
yea she can come collect her sun taxes as soon as she gets back from putting her name on it, otherwise its abandoned property to me which is eventually reclaimed
Well I give her credit for gumption. Now as far as her business plan, I wish her luck but it has a few challenging problems I would think. I wonder how much Madrid is going to charge her for property tax? Does she have to come up with the cost and installation of meters for all us users?
Forget solar power, she's got the market cornered.
As this is the beginning of price gouging for Solar energy, the only reasonable solution is to go "off the grid" to the point where you don't need to depend on "The (wo)Man".
I propose that instead of paying exhorbitant sun tax, the best alternative is to construct one of your very own. Since this is a GNU-driven hardware forum, it of course means that our solution will be Open Source.
Being a tinkerer, I always prefer to start off with some functional finished item and customize it to meet my purposes. Persuant to this, it only makes sense to see if there's any Minuteman II warheads kicking around on eBay.. of course, I haven't checked American Science and Surplus or Deal Extreme yet, maybe we could pick up some cheap North Korean or Iranian knockoffs? You're tripping over the dang things in grandma's attic most days, but when you go looking for one of those pesky thermonuclear doohickeys, you can never find one. Since she's using it for income, we have to assume it is commercially zoned; alternatively she can pay at a residential rate, assuming she makes it her primary residence and mailing address.
I say we repo the sucker right now, before this deadbeat lets the property fall into disrepair... it makes the whole neighborhood look bad. Imagine if the neighbors saw.. keeping up with the Jonses is bad enough, you think she's going to keep the place nice so we don't look like slobs? SHE is the reason we never get invited to those block parties like the Greys and the Zeta Reticulans, you know.
