Regarding the transmit and receive pins of the Arduino, are the terms transmit and receive relative to the PC or to the Arduino? In other words: does the PC receive from the receive pin or does the Arduino receive from the receive pin? My Arduino Pro Mini is connected to my PC with one of those FTDI cables.

They pins on the Arduino board are relative to the Arduino board.

I've been getting an error during upload (avrdude: stk500_getsync() attempt 2 of 10: not in sync: resp=0x74). A few sources online seem to say that one solution is to disconnect the RX pin. If the word 'receive' is relative to the Arduino board itself, then surely it would be impossible and nonsensical to try to upload with this pin disconnected, right?
