I've tried all kind of advises regarding this devise (change of library, IDE, etc.) but so far without success. May s.o. is out there who can help me. Many thanks in advance.

Try adjusting the contrast.   They all seem to be dead until you adjust the contrast so you can see the letters.

You have not said what LCD device you have.
If you have the typical hd44780 20x4 LCD with a PCF8574 i2c backpack,
then I'd recommend that you use my hd44780 library.
It will auto configure itself for that type of device.
Install it using the IDE library manger (do not use a zip file).
The i/o class is hd44780_I2Cexp.
Run the included I2CexpDiag sketch to test everything.

Many thanks to ---bill! Despite various emails with the vendor the problem could not be solved. But with ---bill's advise I could solve it!! ... All the best for 2018.
