There was some discussion of a group in Bangalore last year but it's now read-only...
I just relocated to BLR from the UK and now have zero equipment except for the single duemilanove I threw in my suitcase.
I'm wondering where Bangaloreans or Indians in general would look for components and equipment... do you all buy stuff on-line, or are there hobbyist/professional electronics suppliers in town?

Well some stuff can be bought online(boards, sensors, etc) for others it makes sense to visit the local electronics market over farnell / digikey (you would be surprised at deals you can get! but beware - you can get conned easily if you do not know the subject or are looking for specifics) Availability is limited to components / items that are time tested and are used for production - The hobbyist scene is quiet catching up in India... we(Simple Labs - http://build.simplelabs.co.in/) are seeing an increase in product requests however there is a long way to go... it would be difficult to find all the stuff as in digikey or other sites...let me know if you need any help
OK, so any suggestions for Bangalore shops in the "local electronics market" if I just want to stock up on some basics to use with some students?
i.e. breadboards, multi-packs of resistors and capacitors, potentiometers, wire-strippers, soldering irons and selection of switches and sensors like LDRs, IR distance, tilt switches etc...
I've heard of Om Electronics - can I get all this stuff there?
As for getting conned I know the subject very well, but am a foreigner and have no idea of local prices so I guess I have no chance!
nothing i can suggest... not sure of bangalore... just find out the local electronics market and go in directly...
Caps - 1 - 15/-
Potentiometers - 10 - 50/-
Strippers - 35/-
Iron - 150/-
As for sensors, prices vary depending upon the student project season. check our website( www.simplelabs.co.in ) for the sensors and let me know if you need anything
I know its a rather late reply i've been traveling and couldn't check the forums for some time...
