Arduino Mega 2560 bootloader and FTDI chip?

I am looking at building a bare bones Arduino board based on the Atmega 2560.

I have an FTDI cable to program boards and want to use this to program these new boards.

My question is, will the standard Arduino Mega 2560 bootloader work with the old FTDI cables or will it only work with the ATMega8U2?

Should work with either USB serial converter, 8u2 or FTDI.

Thanks Lefty.

Did you get it working? I'd be interested in programming an Atmega2560 through its bootloader and an FTDI connected to the RX/TX pins...

You've replied to a March 2011 post.

FTDI won't install a bootloader, it only gives you serial comm access from USB on the PC.
