Try to use older versions of the Arduino software, this worked for me.
2 out of 3 laptops that I own running windows 7 didn't work for me - looks like windows 7 compatibility is piss poor but then perhaps it's my Lenovo machines??? Of course this wouldn't happen on Macs or linux machines 
but you gotta remember most of the world is sill stuck on Windoze.
