controlling ableton live 8 with arduino (midi controller?)

Hi!

I am thinking about building a foot controller for ableton live with arduino 2009.

I am new to ableton and I as still figuring out how to work with it properly.
And here is where the the problem starts...
How does Ableton/Guitar Rig/others interpretate Midi signals or even keyboard "shortcuts"? Can anyone enlighten me here?

How can I, theoretically at least, use switches connected to arduino board and then use arduino to "convert" those signals and send them to the computer?

Thanks in advance.

That one is simple and there are lots of examples around, this is what I have done:-

I think you need to look at the Ableton manual for that.
