analog read solar cell

I would like to use the analog read on the arduino to measure the voltage from a usb pocket solar charger.
Would connecting the solar charger directly to the analogread could damage the arduino?

I think voltage of the solar charger is 3.3 - 5v and max current 500ma.

basically I want to point a laser at the solar cell and when it reaches a certain threshold {do something}.

You either need to know that the voltage never exceeds 5V, or you need a voltage divider.
