I think it's used as an output to address the analogue mux.

Not really, considering that you are posting in the Arduino Esplora forum, which is a very specialized Arduino board (and quite different from an Arduino Uno)... :confused:

what i'm saying is when I posted it I was using arduino esplora then I started using the uno because I didn't think there was a A0 pin on the esplora

You've switched over to the Uno, but in case anyone else is reading along, the Esplora has two input pins available as described at the following link
