For a university project, I am planning to use 3 Maxon motor and encoders (attached below) to give me high accuracy position control. I don't have the budget to purchase the Maxon controllers so I was hoping to use an Arduino. I have been searching for a way to do this but I have come up short, due to the 10 pin connector found on the encoder.
Does anyone know if there is a solution to this problem? or am I wasting my time?

Perhaps if you told us how much time you have, then wasting you time might be something to ask about. If you have 6 months full time, then you may be able to get it to work.
By the way, how much experience do you have with electronics, serial communications, etc?
The 10 pin connector is the least of your problems. The use of each one of those 10 pins is where you need to apply your efforts. Minimum hardware will be a RS-422 to TTL adapter for each motor so you can use an Arduino to talk to the motor and listen to what the encoder is sending to the Arduino.
Do you have the budget for the power supplies needed?
