Remote programming via TCP/IP?

I asked this question over in 'general electronics' which didn't get much of a response.

Has anyone tried this sort of thing?

I've never used a 'USB TCPIP print server' before, but it looks like the sort of thing that would do the job. I'm guessing that the computer end needs a driver to create the virtual serial port. Finding something that supports Windows 64 bit is a struggle. All the 'industrial' serial extender solutions seem to involve spending $300+.
