SLOW

Anyone else annoyed by how slow the Arduino software is?

It is slow to boot up, it is slow to open or even load a sketch, it is slow to download the boot loader, and most annoying it that it takes in up words of 30 to 40 seconds to open the "Tools" menu.

It has been this way since version 18. Am I the only one seeing this?
Back in version 10 and 11 things were very quick.

most annoying it that it takes in up words of 30 to 40 seconds to open the "Tools" menu.

No you have something wrong, it opens instantly on both my Mac and PC.

Any clue as to what it could be?
I have DL'd it twice and re-installed twice.

What system are you running on your PC?

It could be the java needs updating.

Windows Vista.

I have no clue how to check/update Java. It useually does that automaticaly.

If it occurs with other applications too you might need to defrag your disks...

Thanks robtillaart, but it says I have the latest version and my disk is defraged once a week.

anyone else have any clues?

What does you taskmanager shows when you start Arduino?

Windows Vista.

Ah don't you just love Microsoft. It is probably going off to check something all the time. Have you tried running off line? Just disconnect your Ethernet cable or turn off your WiFi and see if that speeds it up.

What does you taskmanager shows when you start Arduino?

Under processes or applications? Performance looks normal, CPU about 23% when starting up. Processes shows a Java icon with the new sketch name.

Just disconnect your Ethernet cable or turn off your WiFi and see if that speeds it up.

No differance.

I had a problem with Processing. It opened sketches very slow.
It was because I had my workfolder/sketches on a mapped network drive. As soon as I stored my sketches localy everything was ok.

Does your computer have PDA / cellphone software installed?

What are your video settings?

Have you searched the forum for others that have had similar problems?

Do you have any bluetooth devices plugged in?

As soon as I stored my sketches localy everything was ok.

Well the dir is on Drive D: so I moved it all to Drive C: no differance.

Does your computer have PDA / cellphone software installed?

nope.

What are your video settings?

Does this help?

Have you searched the forum for others that have had similar problems?

Not yet. I have found that I seem to have unique problems.
I thought sure that this was a common one and some one would quickly say "hay dummy, you have to turn ..... on" but to no evail.

Do you have any bluetooth devices plugged in?

No, but I do have a Bluetooth icon in the sys tray - I'll try turning it off.
EDIT
No differance

Thanks everyone for you help, keep the suggestions coming. The most annoying is the fact that I have to wait so long for the "Tool" drop down. the rest I can deal with.

Current Mode: 1680 x 1050 (32 bit) (60Hz)

Try 16 bit color depth.

Try 16 bit color depth.

No Dice.

I will try updating my vid driver.

Ok, the updated driver didn't do it.

I noticed that the Arduino Software list COM9 and COM12. I looked these up in the Device Manager and they are bluetooth stuff. Task Manager shows nothing about bluetooth device - So, how do I shut this down?

EDIT
I disable the ports, but the tools drop down still takes forever to open. BUt COM9 and 12 no longer show in the serial list.

aggravating.

On mine, I've never seen words of 30 to 40 seconds. Which words were these?

If it's any consolation, I'm having the exact same problem with 0021. Mine only takes ~10sec to start-up and ~5sec for the tools menu but it's annoying none the less.

I've got Bluetooth stuff, but after disabling the service there was no change.

EDIT:Found the solution!

It was bluetooth and there's a really easy fix(Bottom of the first post, not the link at the top):

(Found Via: http://www.arduino.cc/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1287002396 [Which is actually still on the first page of this forum right now.])

Hay thats great Azdle, but have you actually downloaded the rar file? All I get is a "Page not found" message.

Did the link work for you?
