Automotive Instrument Cluster Control

I have a instrument cluster that will not work with the new ECU that I installed into the car. So as of right now nothing works on it. I know that they are stepper motors that control each gauge, 6 total. I have seen stepper motor shields on the market. Would it be better to build my own stepper motor driver or use the shields? Is this going to be a huge undertaking? Is there code out there that I can reference? I have pressure and temperature sensors that I can connect to the micro to display on the instrument cluster.

Thanks guys!
