Usage of the MAX488 as a MAX485

Hi,

I ordered the MAX488 to comunicate through RS-485 using Modbus RTU protocol.

Now i have noticed that the MAX488 is full duplex chip ( http://datasheets.maxim-ic.com/en/ds/MAX1487-MAX491.pdf ) which makes me use 4 lines of comunication and separate the Data IN and Data OUT chanels.

Is it possible to use the MAX488 like a MAX485? Using only 1 diferential channel and copying the connections like they are made for the MAX485 in the datasheet?

Does anyone know?

I think not because you do not have a ~RE pin on the MAX488 that means you can't control which way the simplex communications is operating in.
A lot depends on the actual application you are trying to do.

With the 488 I think you are out of luck, for half-duplex you need to disable the transmitter and that's not possible with the 488.
