It should. I built what I think is a clone of this one ( http://www.lancos.com/e2p/betterSTK200.gif but without most of the caps and resistors) because the simple parallel programmer on the arduino site did not work for me.
I also ordered some amtega8 chips from digitkey and got the amtega8-pi not the pu. Will that work as well?
I think the difference is "PU" indicates the lead-free RoHS variant. "PI" is the same device, only non-RoHS compliant.

I should have noted, I burned the bootloader using avrdude instead of uisp.
