Detecting Vigorous Motion

I'm starting to think about how to create a clothing embedded hardware piece which detects a punch, kick, chop or other kind of vigorous motion. I'm struggling with what kind of hardware to use to detect the action.

I'm pretty sure I could pull this off with a series of accelerometers, but that seems expensive and cumbersome to sew into clothing. Writing here to see if anyone has ideas on how to pull something like this off.

Thanks for any help you can provide,

Joe

Many toys detect impact by having a light spring with a wire post own the middle. On an impact the spring bends and makes contact with the post. The contact acts as a closed switch.

a few accelerators on strategic places might cover a bigger area...

@johnwasser - Thanks! I really like that idea and think it will work great for my project. I get the concept in general, but I'm pretty new to hardware. I did a little googling but didn't come up with any good results for wire post and spring. Can you provide any specifics on how to implement this concept - a link to a tutorial, blog post or something similar would be much appreciated. Also, is there a specific name for this kind of switch?
