The MKR1000 is successfully powered by my USB port but does not show up in the device manager so I cannot use the "update driver" protocol to install a driver.  I have installed the SMAD board tools via the IDE.  Any ideas?

By any chance are you using USB 3.0 ports ?
If so try the USB 2.0 ports and if you dont have those then a decent USB 2.0 POWERED hub will often fix USB 3.0 issues.

Also watch your micro USB cables as some are charge only and not full charge AND sync.
Those type of cables also go bad if you so much as look at them wrongly ;)

It may not be the answer you were looking for but its the one I am giving based on either experience, educated guess, google or the fact that you gave nothing to go with in the first place so I used my wonky crystal ball.
