Hi,
Any of you got the ATO phonecall yet? (ATO  Australian Tax Office)
From Jason O'Connor.

http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/i-felt-my-stomach-churn-perth-businessmans-dodgy-tax-scare-20150914-gjm85y.html

http://www.smartcompany.com.au/finance/tax/48460-consumer-affairs-sounds-warning-over-aggressive-tax-scam.html

Jason was kind enough to leave his name and a Canberra phone number to call him back, on my phone.
It must have been well rehearsed or a recording because it was just like reported below.

Quote
"This is Jason O'Connor calling you from the Australian Tax Office," the message began.
"The nature of the purpose of this call is just to inform you that a law suit has been filed against your name concerning a tax evasion...
"Before things go wrong against you, before one of the police officers from the local police department contacts you and issues a warrant for your arrest, call 02 6140 3445."
Then had the gall to say have a nice day!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahhh yes "Jason" a good old Indian name....

I googled the phone number and of-course it rained hits and hits and hits, all from Jason's or two of his other mates making phonecalls.

Tom...... :)

That tax scam is apparently ongoing here too although I haven't received a call from them yet but people are actually falling for it and handing over $10,000+.
I keep getting a recording which tells me that my credit score is good but would I like a credit card anyway? Yeah, right.

Pete

I have modified my approach to telemarketers in this way (in date order):

  • Listening to them
  • Pointing out I am on the "do not call register"
  • Saying "I'm not interested, goodbye"
  • Hanging up the phone without saying anything

I know they are just people doing a job, but I didn't install my phone, and pay for the monthly rental, to be harassed.

You are being a bit generous in saying ringing people to rob them is "just people doing a job".

They know they are robbing the people they are ringing so are simply thieves.

What is fun is to say "I'm so happy you called me as I am looking for <fill in something else> and I cannot find it anywhere. Can you help me find <XYZ>? YOu have contact with so many people, who should I call?"

I once said "I think you need my wife for that", pressed mute and walked away.
After 10  minutes, said "just a minute more", but the line was dead already.

What should also be fun is to have a automatic fphone service device. Can't we make that with Arduino?
"press 1 if you sell something for my garden, press 9 if you sell aquaria, press 5 if you sell radio, press 2 if you are a bank, press 42 for universal solutions, press 007 if you want to talk to James, press 4 if you want to etc"

Then pause and wait for a DTMF tone, to continue with "Please wait for all options", and then go on with an even longer list.
Have a look at "blink without delay".
Did you connect the grounds ?

What I was thinking of was something that asked for a PIN number (which you give to all your family/friends). You could call it an "extension number". If it is entered correctly then the home phone rings. Otherwise it goes straight to the answering machine. Spammers don't usually leave messages on answering machines, and this would handle things like tradesmen who wouldn't know the PIN number.

How about having the caller answer a skill testing question.
No technical PMs.
The last thing you did is where you should start looking.

1) If nobody speaks within 3 seconds, hang up. It's an autodialer. None of my friends have an autodialer.
2) If someone speaks with a foreign accent (it's "Mary" from Mumbai) and asks for you by name, tell them that you no longer live there, or they have the wrong number.
3) If they persist, tell them to go forth and multiply, or words to that effect.

Hi,
LarryD, if you got that from a google news item, a wider view will show you a sample of other groom requests in adjacent columns.

Its a weird word.

Hey, Mr. Spammer! You are supposed to put something there. You know, "you have won the lottery" or "I am pretty girl, I leave nearby", that sort of thing.
