Music book thing

hi all
Sorry for the bad heading for the topic.. I couldnt think of anything else...
I always wanted to know how the books (Photo albums or so) created some sort of sound(I mean some music with peizo or so ) when opened. Any circuit on how this is implemented?? Or atleast anyone know what it is called as or so (I couldnt find the name hence the heading  ) I mean stuff similiar music box. How is this implemented in book binding or so..
Hope you Guys understood what I am trying to say

Hi. when the book is opned, the power to the circuit is connecterd and current is flowing trough the circuit makeing the chip run the music progam, and may stop playing when the program get to the end.

Yeah I knew that. Any circuits to do it? I saw some book with this feature some 10-12yrs back. Dont have the book with me to check the wiring... The circuit should be very small right to fit inside a book. and what about the power source. Anyone here has such a book to chk it out?

I would think any atmega with some memory could do it - play a simple tune from memory, switch contact to start it off. Little battery to power it, piezo to make the sound. Open one up, bet you find bare die with black gook over it, not even packaged. Cards can be had cheaply at drugstores.

Atmega probably is expensive for this.. I meant anyone really knows to do this cheaply. Anyways its not for me to implement... just for knowledge sake of it... BTW what is this bare die and the black thing? I have seen it many circuits..

Atmega may be expensive for this, but its nice because it is programmable and all in 1 package, so minimal connections are needed - cheap switch, battery, transducer.

$3.55 for the Atmega, $0.50 for the battery, $1 for a transducer, probably less for an unpackaged one (no plastic case) ...

Thanx for the info. As I said I am not going to build one. Just for knowledge sake... So usually there is small IC inside that black die?

Yes, the black goo will be covering the IC die that would usually be in the black plastic package with pins.

and becoming less "user servicable" in the process ...

There is a chip you can get from Rapid Electronics called M66T, it looks just like a transistor but is actually a fixed melody generator. This is the sort of thing that is under the blob but in accessible form. They are also very cheap.

Even if you had those chips in dip you cant do anything they are mask rom programmed, this means that the programm is done when the die is created, so its like hardcoded.

Depends what you mean by anything. You can certainly make something that plays that tune. There are several tunes / chips to choose from.

Thanx for the Info u guys... Appreciate it
