hi
it will have to be a metal string, of course... there are instructions here for making your own pickups. Once you have that, you can use a bridge rectifier made out of 1N914's and a little capacitor and resistor to read the pickup's voltage. This diagram is almost exactly what you need.. just replace the transformer with your pickup, and put a 1K resistor across the capacitors.

Excellent - thanks. Will any diodes or bridge rectifier do? I'm not sure that I have those particular diodes around, but I'm pretty sure I can salvage something.
yes any old diodes will do it!
