I don't think you really need a schematic that shows pin 11, pin 13 and ground wires being plugged in.  In fact in this post I provided you this exact detail in december of 2010 including a link to the library.

We purchased some 5v power adapters made to charge cell phones. Since they handle 1.2 amps each - I got 4 of them to run the 70 RGBs in the suit.  The concept worked well and has proven effective.

We also added the spectrum analyzer shield and microphone setup and tested it with ambient music (from a small self powered speaker).

Here is an updated video showing this years Halloween costume suit with these updates.


One month until Halloween - maybe time to give this robot some pants smiley

WS2801
You mentioned the TLC5940 so I"ll toss in the WS2801.  This chip has what I consider the best number of fade step levels - 256 - matching the byte and has a smooth fade.

Outside the atmegaxxx - this chip is my favorite as it provides fantastic music reading capabilities at a very low price point.

If you are going to run this directly from your auto 12v you should consider using some type of regulating device such as the 5v type due to the fact that 12v in your lighter is not normally a perfectly regulated 12v (to say the least - see below).

For that reason I would suggest just going with the new standard - which is 5v for iPods and such .. this also works perfect for powering the arduino.  Then just use the correct resistor for 5v - 1 per LED.  If you don't go with 5v, I would still suggest using a dc/dc regulator  your 12v auto power.

You can get a 1.2 amp 5v USB car charger.  I just used 4 of those to run 70 RGBs and it works fine. 

It is important that you don't just use any 5v charger, find one with at least 1200ma (1.2 amps) or use multiples.

I used old USB cables and splice into the red / black wires.  It is important to NOT assume the colors are correct, I see the black and red reversed at times so be sure to test.  Also the chargers are sensitive to reverse polarity .. so assure you now the 12v +/- before you plug that in as well.

Check out the kinect.  If you are attempting to track something with your computer and locate the exact position in a 3d realm I think you will need more than a camera and/or an arduino.    I hope you are not attempting to track something so small. 

This type of project is not likely to be handled by an arduino outside controlling the physical side.  You have tons to work out before you are ready to attempt the physical side of this type of a project.  Before you can aim at something - you have to know it's exact position.  You can tell that without ever controlling an external device. 

My advice - start with the PC .. the arduino won't do much for you here - at least not at this point.  If you do find out want to control something - then figure out the desired specs of how fast it needs to move, how accurate and what range.  Someone may be able to help understand if the arduino can handle the requirements once there is that level of detail available.

The most important thing to understand at this point is that there are few strips that give you individual control. If you go with one that does have individual control it will have RGB lights.  You can turn the R/G and B lights on at the same level to get white with dimming of each LED individually.  

This strip has individual control - the at sparkfun do not.

You may want to consider a non-strip solution and even raw chips for this project unless you need a small number of lights or have a good budget.  One TLC can run 16 leds with around 4000 levels and one WS2801 can run 3 leds at 256 levels.

Did you try to just not connect power but do connect ground and other 2?  If you tried that and it still does not work then I would venture to say it is not possible.

As mike says - breaking into multiple parts is a great way to attack such a project. I use that concept for most of my larger arduino based builds.  Feeding that many LEDs directly from the computer is not hard using the right technology.   However, it will be a long term learning project for you to build this from scratch with raw chips, the arduino and little experience.  That can be very rewarding - just be ready for it.  Also start much smaller and understand you can't just "scale up directly" as Mike says. 

If an electronics project designed to teach you about the micro-processors is what you are after, then arduino is perfect.  If you are a computer pro that wants to program a matrix then a "turn key" system may be in order.

It will take 36/37 TLC chips to run that many leds unless you multi-plex.  If you re-read all the posts you will see the 3 TLC comment was a typo.

You need to get the data quick enough to update the data 30 fps directly from the computer - that may be pushing the serial limits of the arduino - hence the tall order comment. 

The TLC link I provided above was the first result in a search for TLC5940 on this site - you will have to learn to do some forum searches and start doing lots of learning.   Check this other forum link - 112 RGBs and see the scale of the project.

So consider the scale, time and budget of what you want to do and more forward accordingly if a build is your plan.

From your responses it seems you are looking to stream a 200 LED matrix from the computer at 30fps. 

Pretty tall order for an arduino but maybe not impossible.

Are you a computer person wanting to control a matrix?  If so, what language are you using, etc?

To the original poster?
 - Is there a maximum size?
 - Do you want to stream the matrix content directly from a computer?
 - You say video - how many frames per second are you looking for?

These questions will determine how feasible the arduino platform is for this purpose.

As per my last post - the car chargers work well.  To save space I pulled off the end that goes into the cig socket and wired the black and red wires to the the 12v lithium icon battery mentioned in my last post.  4 of the chargers connected to the same 12v battery ran the suit for an hour.  This is a 30% improvement over the inverter - with less space and no heat. 

Not sure if this solution works for you, but reporting back as promised.  Best of luck with your project.
