Me not angry, just shocked to be told that I as a person am completely intolerable (by some random yutz) for not wanting to send my money off shores

look there is plenty of US distributors, SF doesnt use them, so I giggled when they got burned by a china distributor

Does that make be bad, maybe, but dont expect me to goto their offices, raise the flag, shoot some fireworks and salute them while the star spangled banner plays on a solo trumpet

Ok. So nevermind trying.. Just send ALL of your money to China. I can't stand people like you.

well excuse me, but if you mind pulling your head out of your ass for a second, why would I send all my money to china, I personally try to not send as much as I can

I cant stand people like you, take a statement like that and twist it into your personal political soapbox completely backwards

And not that its any of YOUR effin business but I voted for Obama

were getting way off subject, and I am no economics dude, but I already stated we all cant be salesmen

I most defiantly like money, I just think sending too much somewhere else is not a wise idea

anywho

Atmel had one in Texas, I think there is still a plant floating around here, On semi, fairchild and a few others still produce here (along with other places too)

How do you compete with ultra-cheap labor, lack of labor laws, and lack of environmental standards laws? How do you compete with lower taxes?

dont know, but we need to figure that out pretty soon, or else we will be a nation of expensive paper pushers and why bother doing that here either

Maybe you should compete with them.  Sounds like you have it figured out already.  With the amount of money they're making, you should make a killing with your pricing.

To who are you talking? Wink

I guess me, but I dont see it as a fruitful market, there is a billion hobby shops who all have the same product, and SF already has the "OMG I want an arduinoz" noobs down with a google search and a legion of fanboi's getting giggly over a red box they toss in the bin 10 seconds later

I think it should also be taken into consideration that this is a company that actually operates in the US.

and buys their stuff from china, personal miff, pulling out the USA card when all the supplies are coming out of china, we all cant be salemen we need manufacturing too people here in the states too

They try to create some kind of community feeling around their brand.

Yea I haven't figured their community out, they go nuts whenever a new post appears on the page, they go nuts whenever there is an event, between times there is not much of anything going on, whatever i am not going to try and figure it out

Sparkfun is not just a place to get your components (to much competition in that field)
yea I know, they barley sell anything that is not soldered to a breakout board

but more a nice place to shop.
really? see maybe I am getting old but "yet another OS commerce site with a picture, paragraph and some comments" is just that, course I remember having to go somewhere to get your electronics

not saying that their site is bad or anything, its just another site, I dont see it as any nicer than any of the other millions of OSC sites out there

I know a few of their more complex boards are designed by other people using sparfun as a distribution point, IE the UBW32

and with few to little new products and 90+ employees I am sure there is enough arms around to deal with the everyday's of office life

not saying you dont have good points, but a company of their alleged size and growth should be out there slaying all the smaller hobby shops with their good reputation, excellent support and service, and only bulk manufacture could possibly produce a price THIS good marketing

and yet its often the smaller shops who often beat them on 1 or more points, why?

I dont see a thread asking if lady ada, make, modern design etc is overpriced, and if there was, as in this thread asking if seeedstudios was, its a pretty simple non debatable thing
3233  Forum 2005-2010 (read only) / Bar Sport / Re: Sparkfun overpriced on: July 12, 2010, 06:13:01 pm
if you do it right you only have to design it once, its not like when you order from sparkfun 3 "engineers" jump right into it designing a custom ciruit and board just for your order (this aint Wendy's)

Now I know designing a board to go from tsop to dip is a real ball buster, but most companies would take a loss on that 15 minuets to bring the customer a better price and make it up in sales
3234  Forum 2005-2010 (read only) / Bar Sport / Re: Sparkfun overpriced on: July 12, 2010, 11:18:14 am
That is a bothersome trend in all consumer relations these days, you are stupid, it must have been your fault, the customer is ALWAYS wrong

Its like the week long battle with the phone company when I moved last year, we wont spend 1 second of our time with you because you must have screwed something up inside (like plugging in a DSL modem) if you agree to accept a bill we can come out and fix it for you, if we were wrong we will issue a credit (at some undisclosed future event)

I dont have the time or patience for that kind of crap, and so I told them where to stuff it and went with another company

if sparkfun automatically assumes their customer is going to screw something up, then THEY need to sit down and make a proper design that removes that week point, with the markup's they have on these things they could toss in a few diodes
3235  Forum 2005-2010 (read only) / Bar Sport / Re: Sparkfun overpriced on: July 11, 2010, 12:44:33 pm
yea considering there is a 3.29$ chip (that is for single quantities in dip chip) a 25 cent crystal, a 50 cent battery holder and a 1.50$ battery its hard to beat 7.90$ unless your into doing a quantity of over 100

but yea I would build one (lets face it, its not that hard) on perfboard before handing over 20$ + shipping for one
3236  Forum 2005-2010 (read only) / Bar Sport / Re: Sparkfun overpriced on: July 11, 2010, 12:37:13 pm
I dunno, I always had shipping issues, not the wrong stuff, nor anything else, just getting them to send it, I guess I didnt spend enough to get VIP treatment and have my stuff shipped within a week of ordering it

(now cue the fanboi to negate my personal statement with a FACT since they never had a issue)

Ok. They have profits of over $10000000 a year. If they work for 48 weeks, 6 days a week, that is then a profit of $35000 a day. If the average profit is $5 per item (just guessing here but probably close when you take out all other costs) then that equates to about 7000 products a day.
If you had to send out 7000 products a day, would you be able to check every single one or would you expect that occasionally something might go wrong.

would you like some leprechauns while were in fantasy land?

when its a obious screw up they will dance for you, if its "open log doesnt work and I want a refund" its a different experience (which is one of their wonkier products)

I can understand why Sparkfun is overpriced, I mean you have to make a living, right?

everyone else is making a living without gouging customers, and I bet some of those people actually design their stuff, really look at sparkfun products, the majority of their products are ripped directly off of google, and even sometimes its just the sample application in the datasheets! Which is not neccacarially a bad thing, but they slap "copyright x sparkfun.com" all over everything then charge a extreme premium for it.

The stuff they do design in house often time does not work right out of the box, there is not a single week, sometimes days that we dont see Sparkfun X wont work, If buying this crap means we dont have to "shave the yak" (also meaning you never learn anything and have to continue to go back to sparkfun for any and every need) why should people spend months trying to get it working?

Their phone support is 50/50 I have heard both sides, returns is impossible, the customer is ALWAYS wrong, their forum system is a mess and mostly ignored by staff

Well SparkFun must be doing something well as they seem to have been having tremendous growth over the last couple of years. I especially like the user feedback comments associated with most product listings.

I debate their level of growth, they seem to always be fudging that, for example it was eariler this year they were showing off their google maps representation of the building, as a 5+ story tall complex, and its not

Also big growth out of companies like this is BAD for the hobby market, look at the last 2 that got high and mighty on their prices and selection, radio shack and allied,  those 2 with their completely ignorant sales staff and WTF pricing killed hobby electronics in the 90's

Call me a fan, I like their little red boxes

Call me a realist, plain brown boxes cost about 40 cents a unit in moderate bulk, printed boxes cost well over a buck each, least from the supplier (and quantities)  I deal with at work, I understand branding but dont try and sell me a 50 cent part for 5 bucks and ship it in a 1.48$ box, and expect me to rave on the value of it all

I much rather see a company doing everything to bring me the best quality product they can at the lowest possible price
