Use GsmScanNetworks example, included with Arduino GSM Library, to check that your modem and your SIM is OK. With example TestGPRS you can check network connection, change line 'GSM gsmAccess;' with 'GSM gsmAccess(true);' for activate debug mode and see in serial monitor the comunication between modem and micro, post your serial monitor.

Could you activate debug mode replacing "GSM gsmAccess;" line with "GSM gsmAccess(true);"?. Post your serial output.

With debug mode activated (GSM gsmAccess(true)smiley-wink. Can you post your serial monitor output, please?.

Your SIM card is not registering itself on the network. Is it a BlueVia SIM?, or other carrier SIM card?

Can you replace line "GSM gsmAccess;" with "GSM gsmAccess(true);"?
Please, post your serial monitor output.

The actual library doesn't contemplate any function for enter PUK code. You have to use a mobile device for desactivate PIN code.

Hi, activate debug mode changing line "GSM gsmAccess;" to "GSM gsmAccess(true);". After, post here your serial monitor output.

With a mobile phone, you can desactivate PIN code.

It's possible that CNUM returns only OK. Some SIMs haven't got MSISDN saved in memory.

What is the version of your Arduino IDE?
57  Products / Arduino GSM Shield / Re: Original Arduino GSM Library - change RX / TX to Hardware Serial on: September 10, 2013, 01:49:39 am
GSM3SoftSerial was designed for emulate a serial port by software, not for hardware native serial port. You have to modify it or create a new code for it.
If you can use a serial port emulate by software, RX pin must be a pin with support for interruptions.

You have to contact with your prefer operator. In theory, you only need any SIM, because modem is standard for GSM networks.

If you want connect other shields with Arduino official GSM Shield, digital pins 2, 3 and 7 are used by GSM Shield.

Try this AT commands sequence:

3. AT+CSMP=17,255,0,0

4. AT+CSAS=0

(Reboot your Arduino + shield)

5. AT+CSMP? for check if 17,255,0,0 has been saved. If it done, send a SMS.

The shield has a Power button, did you try with it?. Can you try to test shield with Arduino UNO?.

You can do a sketch for power on modem setting CTRL pin in HIGH for 10 seconds. For example, try with this sketch:

#include <SoftwareSerial.h>
#include <string.h>

char incoming_char = 0;
SoftwareSerial cell(2,3); // check GSM RX and GSM TX matches with digital 2 and digital 3 pin.

void setup()
  // Initialize serial ports for communication.

  // Reset
  Serial.println("Start Reset");
  pinMode(7, OUTPUT);
  digitalWrite(7, HIGH);
  digitalWrite(7, LOW);
  Serial.println("End Reset");

  Serial.println("Enter your AT commands (with CR & NL)...");

void loop()
  if(cell.available() > 0)
    incoming_char =;
    if((incoming_char >= ' ') && (incoming_char<='z'))
      Serial.print((int) incoming_char);
      if(incoming_char == 10)

  if(Serial.available() > 0)
    incoming_char =;

When serial monitor shows Enter your commands, you have to try with AT commands, with NL & CR configuration and 9600 bps. The modem should respond.
