Not a problem. and Welcome.

On the MAX232 board - yes - on the mega - No, the Rx/Tx leds are run from the FTDI/16u4 chip

How are you trying to read the ports? you will get nothing from the USB as it is only connected to Serial.

also disable or remove any Bluetooth devices (I've had this cause the same fault)

In response to being called a 'self righteous twit' - I have responded in a manor that gives an expensive, time consuming , but efficient way to get the knowledge you seek, or use the method I used to learn EVERYTHING I know about arduino & electronics, I have been a tinkerer for years, and a hobbyist for the last 3 years, and I extensively use GOOGLE, ARDUINO.CC and YOUTUBE to learn, Until 2 years ago I was on the 'DOLE' (Unemployment benefit) and had very little to spend on anything, but with internet access at my local LIBRARY (yet another place to learn) I expanded my knowledge, and from there I now have a job in Electronics Design & Customer Support.

Please do not offend myself or anybody kind enough to give there help and support (even if it is to point you to other methods to learn).

Ah - at no point did you even make this information available - you mentioned your work and could 'we' make this, I am sorry for misunderstanding.

517  Products / Arduino Due / Re: Real time control project on: February 04, 2014, 03:14:58 pm
I know the Due specs very well - you give a 0-3.3v as a reference to the input voltage - I see no reference to the accelerometers you intend to use.

OK - you have permission - go ahead.

Goto your local collage and see what courses they do for introduction to electronics, do that course, then do an electrical engineering course (with masters) - than you will be well on your way, or as has been said on this post, use GOOGLE

0-3.3v is not negative it is zero to three point three volts
521  Using Arduino / Installation & Troubleshooting / Re: Cant upload to my two Uno's via USB only ICSP on: February 04, 2014, 02:50:24 pm
-patmega8

That shows you have the wrong board selected

Yes it is feasible.
523  Using Arduino / Project Guidance / Re: use phone headphone jack to make quiet vibration on: February 04, 2014, 02:38:28 pm
OK - What? I'm interested . . .
524  Using Arduino / Installation & Troubleshooting / Re: avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00 on: February 04, 2014, 11:28:28 am
You can buy a pre-bootloaded 328 and swap it for the atmega8
