thanks smiley i'll get back with results or more noob questions smiley-grin

LadyAda seemed to like the schematic smiley

i appear to only be able to find a couple of transistors that say c559c and c549c, i have the diodes, and i hope i have the resistors smiley

will those transistors be ok and what changes to the schematic will they require? or do you have any other suggestions?

i am also unsure how to identify the100n cap in the mixed caps i have..

thnx smiley i'll look into it today smiley i hope i can use this and have the parts needed smiley-grin

(edit) Dang the only transistors i can find are 559 and 549 not 557 and 547 smiley-sad

what trade offs can i do with this schematic to suit the components i have? i havnt even tried to look at what resistors i got and dont know how to identify some caps or diodes smiley-sad

man im a total noob.. most of my stuff is harvested from old junk u see..

ok thnx. i discovered that there was something wrong with my dec board when i tried to upload a sketck onto the new chip.. it wasnt communicating and i though it was the old chip.. now i find the board isnt communicating with the chip at all cos the rx tx led's wont blink and pin 13 wont light at all.. so something is wrong smiley-sad

the boarduino works fina as far as i can tell. but i need to load a sketch onto it to be 100% and with no working ftdi im screwed..

also i dont want to try my parallel cable on the new chip in fear of buggering it up smiley-sad

i cannot get a usb adapter but i have a serial cable here but im not entirely sure on the schematic for the cable , apart from pins 2, 3, and 5.. what other pins are needed (like reset, +5v) and how is it constructed.. please need help. my old arduino board is faulty and i cant use it to upload to the boarduino's chip smiley-sad

the crystal will read open circuit with an ohmmeter. I can pretty much guarantee you it's not the crystal- I have never seen a defective crystal. Check everything else, i.e. the traces, power at appropriate pins etc.

D

yup i discovered that one myself earlier smiley-grin crystals don't register smiley..

i may have one or 2 caps out then i suppose. I'll do more tests on the ones i suspect and get back to u. hopefully i have replacements if its them..

thnx for ure help so far peeps smiley

it broke after i repaired a bridge in the circuit when i discovered pin 6 (Digital) when used or a button was shorted to the ground somewhere.. it reset the board whenever used.

I removed the chip to make the repair.. the repair went flawlessly. the short was removed cleanly. but when i put the chip back on it wouldnt start..

i am wondering if the crystal may have had heat damage. as i had to try some resoldering on the chip bed (was in crooked but it was ok. more ugly than anything).

what shoud a mutlimeter show when testing the crystal cos i am getting a no reading on the continuity test (diode).

nope its a brand new chip. and it works fine smiley (tested in the boarduino)

the problem lies in the board

thnx smiley but i dont actually know how to change the fuses :S

i have been trying to work out why my Diecimila clone wont start up.. there are no bridges and the usb to serial section works fine.
I tested it by wiring it up to the Boarduino using the serial, reset, +5, and gnd. it uploaded sketches perfectly.. there was no chip in the Diecimila naturally.

but when i have a chip in (i got a new working atmega with blink on it) nothing happens.. i'm thinking when the old ship went down it took the crystal with it smiley-sad

Seeing as i have no replacement to test this theory what can i use in its place?. i assume it has to be 16 mhz so 4 wont work (i got 2 4 mhz oscillators in my harvest box, but they are 3 pin like the usb one and the one on the Boarduino).

Can a 555 timer be used in any way to emulate it? if so how? i just need to know if it is the crystal or not and i cant think of any other way of testing it to be sure.

suggestions?

thanks for the replys smiley

the chips pins went in fine, no bending, and it was seated properly..
it was also oriented properly. i really think the chip has just died or summin it will not respond at all. it probably got a static jolt from something smiley-sad the board seems to be ok. the usb attaches fine, and the board powers up on both battery and usb.. its just not booting or showing any life on the atmega part..

unfortunately i am unable to get any spare chips right now due to lack of funds so i cant test another chip in the board to be sure this one is dead smiley-sad
74  Forum 2005-2010 (read only) / Troubleshooting / Re: digital pin 6 cuts out board! eep! on: January 06, 2008, 10:15:14 am
nooo!! the board isnt booting! are the atmega's suseptable to much static? it was put on an anti static surface out of the way of harm, but when i placed it back into the bed the board wouldn't boot ore let me upload new sketches..

its like the chip is dead smiley-sad after al that and the chip dies? why? grrr (yea i'm peeved) i have no spare chips to test if its dead, or another board to place it on..

this is a disaster smiley-sad

where can i get real cheap spare atmega168 chips?

i gotta do more tests to see what is not working.. the chip or the board.. smiley-sad
75  Forum 2005-2010 (read only) / Troubleshooting / Re: digital pin 6 cuts out board! eep! (fixed?) on: January 06, 2008, 09:55:18 am
ok after digging out my best magnifiers and tracing the track again and again i thought i found a microscopic bridge where the track passed between pins 19 and 20 on the chip bed (solderside) so i carefully cleaned between it and the track by scratching it with a sharp soldering tool, and putting some red pen over it (same colour as board) to see if it looked clear.

after doing so and making sure the rest of the track was clear of possible bridging i tested it brainless again and its no longer cutting out smiley

it was a bridge between digital pin 6 (pin 12 on atmega168) and pin 20 on the atmega168 that was caising it, and was pretty impossible to see it..

must test it with sketches and chip in now..

problem over i hope smiley
