Je cherche un équivalent au MAX7219M qui permette en plus de controler la luminosité de chaque leds indépendamment. avec le MAX7219 on ne peut controler que la luminosité de la matrice entière.

Crucial question : can I actually control a led matrix with the 74HC165. Found documentation with the 74HC595 but there isn't a latch pin on the 165. Maybe have somebody a link to a good tutorial using such logical components...

Yeah i will not solder surface mount components ! Not yet. Maybe never because i think machines can do that very well !

The CAT9532 seems to be interesting, 4 different brightness  is better than 2 ! The negative point is that the max7219 can drive 64 leds instead of 16 fors this one. I need to drive at least 441 leds. So ...

I understand that the cat9532 can keep in memory two blinking frequency.  Is the blinking the way to change the brightness ? Stupid question maybe  :

But the cat9532 is a lot cheaper !

Yes, have already seen that. And it doesnt answer my question. There is a max of 40 mA per I/O but... is that possible to give enough power to hundreds of leds and control them with the board :
