Maybe this is the issue your are seeing:
http://code.google.com/p/arduino/issues/detail?id=806

The suggested fix is to edit boards.txt and change the following line:
mega2560.upload.protocol=wiring

You might find this article helpful:

If you use the steps outlined here:

http://arduino.cc/forum/index.php/topic,94651.msg727588.html#msg727588

You can use the original .inf files included with 1.0.1.

You should probably use

-cstk500v2 or -cwiring

with the Arduino Mega 2560

They did not do a demo during the talk in the auditorium that I attended.

They were doing live demos in the Arduino/Atmel tent. It was very crowded, so I did not get any hands on.

From what I could tell during the demos at the tent, it looks like it is ready to go.

Paul is correct. If I heard correctly, the SAM3X8E is the chip on the Due.

They said it would sell for 49 USD.

It is being shipped to all the regular distributors, so that it will be available to buy on Oct. 22

They said the cause of delay was the wait for the availability of the chip.

No, I was in the auditorium during the talk.

They announced the Due will be released on Oct. 22. There will be an updated IDE to support the Due and all of the other Arduino boards. The announcement said the IDE  will make it much easier to support new tool chains and thus add support for new hardware going forward. Not a lot of detail yet. There will also be a new program called " Arduino at Heart" to be something like the Intel Inside program. It's to allow products to show they are using Arduino at the heart of there product.

The DUE will be released Oct. 22. This was announced at Maker Faire New York.

You should probably get the latest drivers from Silabs here:

345  Using Arduino / Installation & Troubleshooting / Re: Arduino Driver - ATMega2560 - Windows 8 RTM on: September 18, 2012, 10:40:14 am
What version of the Arduino IDE do you have?

If you browse to the Drivers folder, do you see the following driver .inf files?

Arduino Leonardo.inf
Arduino MEGA 2560 REV3.inf
Arduino MEGA 2560.inf
Arduino Mega ADK REV3.inf
Arduino Mega ADK.inf
Arduino Micro.inf
Arduino UNO REV3.inf
Arduino UNO.inf
Arduino USBSerial.inf

If so, make sure when installing the driver, you select the Drivers folder and NOT the "FTDI USB Drivers" folder.
