The software and storage benefits of using a desktop computer as a CNC controller have always been significant enough for me to never consider using a microcontroller instead. I use Mach 3. A computer works really well for driving graphics displays too. smiley

It's probably not a good idea to do things like fill out a form using a fake company name. While unlikely that anyone would press charges, receiving products in the mail as a result of giving false information could be fraudulent. Just be honest, and if they still give you the parts then they're being cool, buy stuff from them in the future if you get the chance!

With the current climate of the world economy, we'll continue to see growth in businesses that provide lower cost or DIY-enabling items. Often this means a small business that has very low overhead. There's a renaissance in garage industries, and in larger companies throwing a little thought at a problem rather than just money. At least in California, the odds are 1 in 10 that you'll be laid off, but if you have a skill you may be able to keep yourself off the street.

I wonder. His company has grown significantly since I suggested that he set up a web store last year. It's possible that he has some employees and one of them is a little overzealous. Or maybe he wanted to create an identity that is only used to promote new Arduino products, so that anyone not interested in buying stuff can simply ignore the topic.

Happy Hacking keyboard? They're expensive.

That's a little dinged up compared to how mine arrived...I even had the original manual and spare graticule. But the price + storage function is pretty nice.

I've played with the PoScope a little. It seems pretty useful, especially for microcontroller work.

Once you need to look at signals more than a couple megahertz, it's really inexpensive to pick up a Tek 465B and probes. I got one about 8 years ago for hobby work and it's never let me down. Ok, so storage would be nice, and I use that function of a digital scope at work all the time. It's just the cost issue: 100Mhz analog scope, good condition, $100 range. Good digital scope: order of magnitude more.

Looks like 3 to 6 posts per day, 2 or 3 posts during work hours, and usually small posts. The big posts with quotes, you are doing later in the evening.

No one can focus continuously on a single task, if you take a break every couple hours and spend a few minutes catching up on something you like which could feed back into your job, I don't see a huge problem.

I'm reminded of the Google (and other companies) 20 percent working time for personal projects rule.

This isn't about carry-on, this is about ordering high power laser pointers online. Can't do it anymore, not to the States.

If you haven't left yet, look for high-power green lasers. smiley

You can't order anything over 5mW anymore. I remember playing with a 150mW green laser last year and they're amazing.

Since it seems to be an FDA "recommendation" that is stopping the flow of green lasers, I don't know if it's actually illegal to bring one back with you in your luggage. Might want to check first.

I've also seen DIPs where the skinny part of the leads were just sheared off, and the fat part soldered to the PCB. It looks like a normal through-hole installation except there's no holes. The hard part would be shearing them all at the same length, any difference will make soldering difficult.

You can lay a small metal rod, like a small screwdriver shaft, along the inside of the pin row and then bend everything over by hand or using a flat point screwdriver. However, I almost never do this because I either buy surface mount chips, or resign myself to drilling holes.

Here's one I did just now, using a small drill bit and a screwdriver:

Lose access? Like what...falling victim to a phishing attempt? I've used PayPal for 9 years and put thousands of dollars through it with no problems. Use a strong password, don't access PayPal on computers that aren't yours or may have trojans or viruses, and don't click on sketchy links.

Also, the ability to link to a bank account has been part of PayPal for as long as I can remember....
