1  Using Arduino / Installation & Troubleshooting / Re: Arduino Mega serial port not detected on: February 25, 2013, 03:59:31 pm
Two possibilities for you based on my own recent experience.
a)  Are you using a USB port extender hub.  Sometimes these do not allow certain devices to enumerate. If you do, make sure you run it with external power.
b) Make sure you are using a good USB cable.  Some of the cables are a little flimsy and wires break in the cable.
2  Using Arduino / Installation & Troubleshooting / Re: Arduino 1.5 with Arduino USB-RS232 not being reset on download on: February 24, 2013, 08:11:04 pm
Thanks Nick, I will drop a report of there.  In the mean time others giving V1.5 a fly are warned!  smiley-lol

@Retrolefty
Clearly IDE 1.5 is a beta release to let people play with their new Due boards and is not suppose to be a replacement for the current production 1.0.3 release for all the other arduino boards.
It is clear that it supports Due!   However, it is not clear, that it is not supposed to be a replacement for the whole range of Arduino boards! The developers have not made it clear & I gather neither of us can read their minds.

That is the current "work around" Nick.
By the way, does that comment get to the developers or is there another method to report issues in Beta versions.

5  Using Arduino / Installation & Troubleshooting / Arduino 1.5 with Arduino USB-RS232 not being reset on download on: February 24, 2013, 03:31:26 am
Hi,
I have an older Arduino with a RS232 which I am using with Arduino 1.5 Beta & Win 7.  I use one of two types of USB - RS232 convertors.
The first time I download a sketch all is OK.  The next time I do it it hangs in the download after compile.
I can get around it in two ways.
- Pull out the USB connector & re-insert it. It will then work one more time!
- Open up the terminal & close again.  It will then work one more time!

I checked the reset line with a logic pulse and basically the work arounds give me a reset pulse, whereas when I do a download without a
workaround, I do not get a reset pulse on doing a download.
I had not experience this problem whilst I was using an Arduino Uno so, I changed the boot loader from a very old bootloader
to optiboot with ATmega328P (which now makes it an uno) and I still have the problem.
I tried both my USB to RS232 cnvertors, same problem.
I have only noticed this phenomena since upgrading from V1.03 to V1.5
When I reverted back to V1.03 it works fine.
So, it seems that there could be an issue with V1.5 not giving a sufficient reset pulse.

6  Development / Other Software Development / Re: Need testers for a new IDE on: November 21, 2012, 06:35:29 pm
Thought I would try this as I need some functionality which I cannot get with standard IDE. (Win 7/64 bit & Arduino UNO)
Getting quite a few compile warnings  regarding HardwareSerial.  Does not stop the sketch running though!

I really need to be able to "cut" from the Serial terminal output, for debugging/documentation purpose.
Unfortunatily,  ArduinoX does not do that at this time!  Will it be able to in the future?
I will keep an eye on this development, as the standard IDE is not all that good!
7  Using Arduino / Sensors / Re: Animal detecting Sensors for Arduino? on: November 21, 2012, 05:53:54 pm
Man is an animal of course, so what you are saying is that you want to detect all animals except man.  It should be obvious given, that such a sensor will not be a "simple, cheap & readily available.
It would involve many sensors and processing to discriminate between man and other members of animal species.

I don't understand why this filter multiplies by 1.0.
I did not understand it either, so I deleted it!  It turns out that the sketch size remains the same, so the compiler must be smart enough to have given it the flick!

The variable
Code:
intial_value
is initialized but is never used in the algorithm.
I believe that if
Code:
x
instead is initialized with the initial "best guess value", the algorithm will converge more quickly (assuming the initial guess was a good guess)
Thus
Code:
void KalmanFilter::KalmanInit(float _q, float _r, float _p, float _intial_value) {
  q = _q;
  r = _r;
  p = _p;
  x = _intial_value;
}

initial_value can be given the flick!
10  Using Arduino / Installation & Troubleshooting / Re: Arduino0023 & Windows7 crashes at end of downloading sketch. on: November 20, 2011, 01:50:08 am
Fair comment!  I searched my drives rather than Google!
I will follow up that lead, but it talks about XP and I would have thought that I had the latest drivers since it is not an old PC. But you never know. It is very strange that with Arduino 22 I am having no problem (nor have I had since it was released), but then Windoze is a strange beast.  I will report back my findings.
Thanks for the help!
11  Using Arduino / Installation & Troubleshooting / Re: Arduino0023 & Windows7 crashes at end of downloading sketch. on: November 20, 2011, 12:59:52 am
Ah yes, I had forgotten that detail.
I have tried it on two Arduino Pro Atmega328 +5V 16Mhz. Uses MAX232 & USB to RS232 convertor, ( several types of convertor were tried in case I had a crook one)  & an ArduinoMega1280 with on-board USB.
I have a feeling it is not board related. I have loaded about 20 sketches without incident since going back to V22
A look at the blue screen minidumps seems to suggest that ser2pl.sys is likely to be the cause, but a search for that file does not find it??.

12  Using Arduino / Installation & Troubleshooting / Arduino0023 & Windows7 crashes at end of downloading sketch. on: November 19, 2011, 11:49:25 pm
Hi All,
FWIIW,  I downloaded Arduino23 yesterday.  Since then, I have not been able to download many sketches to a ATmega328, which worked OK with Arduino22.
The sketch compiles OK, seems to down load OK and at the time that it seems to be finished, I get the Windows Blue Screen.
I tried different
- Arduino targets.
- sketches ( very small into sketches seem to be ON)

PC seems to be working quite OK in other respects.
I have reverted back to Arduino0022 and all seems to be working OK again. (???)
