Very interesting!  Where is the sensor; inside altimeter body or elsewhere?

Hello, I am a physicist and one of my hobbies is electronics and programming.  I would be willing to look over a block diagram and examine the goals to see if I can offer arduino programming assistance.

Watched the ManLab episode last night - nice!
They were a bit vague about the filling of the ashes into the partially filled balloon.  I see a good chance for a mishap.

Been working on the MCU and sensors - the fun stuff.  Haven't thought through the tracking to far, yet.  I have a gen1 Spot tracker however it is a bit heavy and may go for a gen2 Spot for weight savings.
Didn't know about Manlab - I'll give it a go.

PeterH - Yes, I plan on retrieval.  Current plan is to use a Spot tracker or a cheap mobile phone with child tracking mode or something like that.  I hope to be under 3 pounds or 1.5 kilos.  I will look into the Honeywell senor.

kg4wsv - That is an idea!  I tend to over think sometimes.  I was already thinking about airflow tubes, valves, etc.  This makes it much simpler.

Thanks guys!

Hello,

I am creating a sensor array that will be included in the payload of a high altitude balloon.

Currently I have the following components wired, coded and working:
MCU - Arduino Nano
GPS - Garmin GPS35-LVS (time, lat, long, elevation, groundspeed)
Temp - TMP36
Pressure - BMP085 (breakout board from Sparkfun)
Accel - MMA7361 (breakout board from Modern Device)

I am not too happy with the results from the BMP085 nor will it handle the low pressure at the higher altitude.  Any recommendations for another pressure sensor that would reliably work in a lower pressure environment?

I will also be looking for a camera to control/hack for photos and videos - suggestions welcome.

I also plan to include a small vial of my Mother’s ashes in the payload.  Another challenge/decision would be to disperse these at altitude.  I am pondering the mechanics.

Cheers,
Lawndart
