You could try putting a 100Ω to 1000Ω resistor between pin 2 and ground of your LM386. I would suspect the inverting input is floating above ground and causing an unwanted output from the LM386.

Do I have to remove arduino 0022 before I install arduino 1.0 ? I'm using Scientific Linux 6.0 which is really RHEL 6. I'm new to both of these software technologies. http://www.scientificlinux.org/. Thanks.
